We've caught plenty of glimpses of Samsung's 7" Android tablet, the Galaxy Tab, but now they're done beating around the bush. Here's nine minutes and change showing pretty much every feature it has to offer. And it looks awesome. [Crunchgear] More »

Spray-on Clothing: for the chronically late

I love this product. More garment magic that let's us be smart and creative with one of the daily activities we take for granted.

Our friends at BurdaStyle point us to this video about Spanish fashion designer, Manel Torres, who worked with scientists to develop a spray-on fabric that can be used to create clothing.

The liquid is made from a suspension of tiny cotton fibers and plastic as well as a solvent. When it's sprayed, the solvent evaporates, and allows the material to harden.

Like existing materials, the fabric can be washed and re-worn, or be transformed in to new pieces of clothing.

The fabric can be dissolved with the same solvent and re-sprayed again and again.

suzanne lee: biocouture - growing textiles

I can't even imagine what this fasion technology will evolve into. But let's try... Eventually they'll be able to standardize production of the cellulose textile and add whatever genetic properties they wish. Bioluminescence, spots, stripes, fur, scales? Can you imagine putting on a scaled or feathered body suit made with traces of your own dna to match your pigmentation?!?! I can. and I can't wait.

london-based suzanne lee, is a senior research fellow in the school of fashion / textiles, central saint martins, london.
she is also the creative director of biocouture which investigates the growth of clothing through the use of
bacterial cellulose.

lee's latest garment - which uses these growing textiles - is the 'biocouture' jacket made from cellulose.
instead of coming from plants, the cellulose is produced by millions of tiny bacteria grown in bathtubs of
sweet green tea.

her pioneering project which demonstrates growth of a biomaterial using nothing other tan sugary tea and bacteria,
will also be presented at this time. the 'eco-textile' is grown in flat sheets which are then cut to shape, sewn together or
moulded over 3D forms.

tell no one is the collaborative name of london based filmmakers luke white and remi weeke. the two recently
began to blog their creative process, showing the behind the scenes of the video experiments including seaweed.
this short video consists of a single person, slowly moving around the frame, leaving aspects of the body in
place as they continue to move. the layers of video slowly accumulate and sway in motion together,
creating an effect which aims to mimics seaweed. while the images of this video demonstrate the effect,
seeing it in motion is a must.

3D illusion paintings, are too cool for me

How in the world do they do this? What is the process? My guess is that they're using a lot of math and computers. Kudos to you guys for figuring out how to make this a reality.

Old School Design

This is how I usually go about working on my little projects for the St. Art Gallery. I feel vindicated in my low-tech approach to design and production. It's good to use computers for some things, but not for everything. There's a tactile element to design that has to be accounted for somehow, and computer programs like Blender, Sketch-up etc. haven't advanced far enough to replace the human sense of touch, smell and other more subtle ways we engage an object.

Here's a neat video about a design firm in the '60s, and what it looked like to build things before the days of 3d modeling and rapid prototyping. Designers drew out many different plans, then the favorites were cut out in a machine shop, cast, and assembled painstakingly by hand. Looks like fun! [via core77]

In this video we see a protective mother deer beat up a dog and scare the hell out of a relentlessly curious and foolhardy cat. It's pretty disturbing, but I am glad I watched it. Deer often come into our back yard, and if my kids saw a fawn, they'd probably run over and try to cuddle with it. I think I'll show them this video to let them see what could happen. (The dog is reported to be OK.)

Now I officially feel OLD!

Seeing all this old crap I had when I was younger really emphasizes how digital everything is now. We didnt' have too many video games, social networks, cell phones, etc. We had plastic and TV and adults who took drugs to figure out how to make money off just those two things.

Durex: Baby App

Why didn't I think of this!!!.... oh yeah...

Sent to you by knoemoore via Google Reader:

Durex Condoms has released a great iPhone app that replicates what it's like to care for a new born child. By downloading the app a user can impregnate another iphone thus causing the user to have to take care of his baby. The app wil alert and annoy you constantly, just like a new born does. The only way to block this, or prevent it is by getting a link to the condom app through the QR Code on the condom box. Not only is this a novel app to help guys relate to the duties involved in caring for a baby, but it sells condoms. To avoid hearing the baby crying and having to feed it all the time we will buy the the condoms for the QR code. But most importantly, we will now use them to avoid having to do this in real life.

Made for the Future Lions 2010 competition, organized by digital agency AKQA and Cannes Lions Advertising festival.
