Kinect hack creates world's greatest shadow puppet (video)
Sent to you by knoemoore via Google Reader:
Hey Xbox 360 Kinect owners, want to spice up those family shadow puppet shows? Then check out the installation prototype created by Emily Gobeille and Theo Watson using an Xbox Kinect connected to a laptop using the libfreenect Kinect drivers and ofxKinect. The openFrameworks system tracks the elbow, wrist, thumb, and tips of the fingers to map a skeleton onto the movement and posture of an animated puppet. And get this: it was made in a day. So just imagine the Kinect homebrew we'll have around this time next year. See it in action after the break.
[Thanks, Pradeep]

hot & heavy - concrete and light bulbs
Sent to you by knoemoore via Google Reader:
After breaking a series of coatracks, a Virginia-based tinkerer who goes by the handle Whamodyne needed to make some stronger wall hooks to hang his heavy winter gear from. His mounting solution was to use lag screws driven into wall studs, but he still needed a form factor for the protruding end. Whamodyne's solution: Concrete light bulbs.
By hollowing out a cheapie light bulb, filling it with mortar mix concrete and breaking the glass off, Whamodyne was able to create some seriously heavy-duty hooks with enough bulbousness to hang a heavy coat without having to fumble with hanging loops and hooks. Having perfected the process, he's posted an Instructable of how to do it.
Want one, but don't feel like getting your hands dirty? He also sells them on Etsy.

Design without a dime
Sent to you by knoemoore via Google Reader:
Extremely talented, and perhaps a bit strange (what's up with the chemical suits?), Italian design group Recession Design has created a whole line of modern furnishings for in and out of the home, and provided all the assembly plans free to download. I'm really digging the pastel palette and overall design layout too. Over 30 projects are available to download as a PDF at their website. Warning: the instruction are in Italian.

YouTube Link. You can buy the single on iTunes or Amazon. Follow the band on Twitter, Facebook, or MySpace. Oh, fine, it's a gimmick, but a clever one. And sure beats parking a truck in the middle of a Los Angeles freeway.
